A story about "influence: The Psychology of Persuasion (Collins Business Essentials)"

influence: The Psychology of Persuasion (Collins Business Essentials)

by Robert B. Cialdini

This book came highly recommended to me from multiple sources.

The first three chapters were very interesting and are covered in sticky notes, underlines, and highlights. It’s not that the book shared anything particularly new, but it presented it in an organized fashion that directly related to many of my current business endeavors. If you have any project that involves selling/marketing – whether writing web copy or attending networking events – there will be some good tips, or at least friendly reminders, in these first three chapters.

The rest of the book was pure pop psychology, along the lines of “Stumbling on Happiness” – well-written, with many illustrative examples, but not all that useful. I only highlighted three phrases in all of chapters 4-8. If you like pop psychology, the rest of the book is an easy and enjoyable read.

I am not a fan of British television or television in general, but I do love Clive Owen, so I threw these discs on my NetFlix queue.

The love scenes were a little hard to watch, but otherwise, this was truly sumptuous—it fully captivated my attention for hours.

The speed at which character development and history were glossed over was blinding.

A review of "Death of a President" (rated 4 stars)

I am not exactly “pro-Bush” at the moment but at the same time I do not relate to most anti-Bush zealots. I expected this film to be 90 minutes of Bush-bashing but was pleasantly surprised to find a healthy balance of criticism while treating his hypothetical assassination compassionately.

I disagree that it’s too controversial to depict the assassination of a sitting president. At least it is clearly a fictional film and not fiction-purporting-to-be-truth ala Michael Moore.

There was a bit of gore but it was fairly tame overall, despite the suggestion on the NetFlix DVD sleeve that it is “not for the faint of heart.” The “love story” between Depp/Graham was underdeveloped at best. Cinematography was fantastic and Depp was, as always, brilliant. Still, I want my two hours and one minute back.

Even at 1069 solid pages of size five font, I found it impossible to put down. (It took about three days—definitely not ‘skim’ material.) Sheer brilliance. Absolutely expanded and refined many of my personal values, from capitalism to sex.

John? Are you out there?

(Unless they actually respect the pope.)

A story about "Yes Lives in the Land of No: A Tale of Triumph over Negativity (Bk Life)"

Yes Lives in the Land of No: A Tale of Triumph over Negativity (Bk Life)

by B. J. Gallagher

This took, max, 15 minutes to read. It was amusing and certainly made its point clearly (Perservere), but it is most certainly not worth $20.

A story about "The No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency (The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency)"

The No.1 Ladies' Detective Agency (The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency)

by Alexander Mccall Smith

A solid, quick read, but definitely not my typical sort of book. (I just joined a new local book club and it is their current selection.) I practically live at Borders, yet this was my very first venture into the “Mystery & Thriller” section.

Although the first in a fictional series, it did spark an interest in visiting Botswana in the near future—and since the author, Alexander McCall Smith, used to teach at the University of Botswana, I am assuming many of the native descriptions were not simply sewn together from National Geographic articles.

I may or may not read more books in the series. I have a significant library of books at home, but very few “casual” reads such as this, so it might be worth investing in the series for those infrequent nights when you just want to curl up with a book and not think too hard, but you cannot bring yourself to give Dan Brown money :)

A story about "Samoas"

Sigh.

Overall, the content left much to be desired. If you need a book to tell you not to wear a white pantsuit to a wine tasting event, you deserve to spill some red down your front.

“Ms. Witherspoon’s first name + rhymes with bling” is certainly a memorable way to remember how to pronounce Riesling, though.
