This is interesting, if a little outdated book about saving money at the grocery store.

There are some (not many) data that I have not found elsewhere: the probable portion yields from 1 pound of a given type of meat or veggies, etc. I don’t agree with a lot of the yield estimates, but the fact that they’re there at all is unusual. Also, she spends some time talking about food distribution, processing before it reaches the consumer, and how that impacts the retail cost of food.

Also, there are interviews with supermarket managers, which make interesting reading, if nothing else.

In general, like almost all books/articles about this subject, it is mostly a rehash of the same old principles: eat seasonal foods, make your own rather than buy convenience food, buy in bulk when appropriate, don’t shop hungry, etc.

I’m not sorry I bought/read this, it did provide me with some new ideas, and that’s unusual, as I’ve been buying “how to save money on food” books for 30 years now!

Pseudonyms have always been a “hobby” of mine. When I found the 1st edition of this book in a thrift shop, I had to grab it. Years ago, I sold my pseudonym multi-volume reference, and I’ve always regretted it!

I bought these books in college when they were new and didn’t think that I’d like them. I ran out of reading material and read them and thought they were great!

As a bookseller, I have to say that Over Sea Under Stone is written in a style that I grew up with, and I loved it. However, younger readers that I tried to interest in the series loved the others, but not Over Sea… because of the stylistic difference.

I expect to be “consuming” this for some time. I have these up in between the kitchen and livingroom. After I got them hung, THEN DH tells me he hates bead curtains. But they make me smile, so they’re staying. We’re going to buy tiebacks for them so that DH doesn’t have things hanging around him, which is why he doesn’t like bead curtains.

When I got these, I thought it was 1 string of lights, originally I’d planned to put them around our two front windows for the holidays. But it’s a curtain of strings of lights. And, I’d been looking for a bead curtain (and didn’t know how DH felt about them) so I put them up as a curtain…THEN DH tells me how he feels about bead curtains. Hmmmf.

I said something like, “The next time I tell you I want to do something, and you hate the idea, tell me, okay?” Jeez. You’d think we hadn’t been married for 26 years, or something!

This stuff is good! Totally a surprise, bought it on a whim. Really liked it a lot. Refreshing, no calories, tasty, no sugar. I mean why drink soda? Now, all I’ve got to do is find someplace closer than 45 minutes away to buy it!

This is a charming story about two Japanese dolls and a girl who’d been raised in India helping each other adjust to their new home in England. There is at least one sequel (Little Plum) and I have vague memories that there’s another, but I don’t remember the title. All the books are by the same author.

The Juggler

This is considered a YA (young adult) novel because it starts with the hero as a youth. It is a dark fantasy and I’d hesitate to give it to a very young, impressionable child because of this. Wonderfully written and well researched. Worth reading and don’t be put off by the YA category.

I bought I thought a complete version of this book, only to find that I had purchased volume 2, which I read. Then I found what appeared to be volume 1, but it is a condensed version of both volumes 1 and 2. Some of the data I was looking for was present, some was not.

Very frustrating. Make sure if you buy this book you know what you’re buying: a condensed version of 1 and 2, or one of the single volumes.

This book hits me on several levels. I have always been interested in WWII espionage for some reason and I’m a bookseller. So, when I found a book about WWII codes and cryptoanalysis by the son of a famous antiquarian bookseller, I just had to read it.

It was entertaining and instructive. I feel that I know a great deal more about codes and coding after reading this book.

It is well written and I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for information about codes, coding, or the SOE in WWII.

Age of Wonders: Exploring the World of Science Fiction

Although the book is not new, if you ever wondered about the attraction that science fiction has for some people, this book was written for you. I cannot recommend it highly enough. It is incredibly well written and approachable for people who just don’t “get” what sf has that other genres do not.

I have read sf most of my life, and sold it for most of my professional life as a used bookseller.

If you’re still not sure if the book will have what you’re looking for, follow the link to Amazon and read the first two pages of the introduction. David Hartwell states clearly who he’s writing for, and why.

Although, as an sf “fan” I also would recommend this book to other sf fans. There are conclusions here that I had not quite reached about the field. I spent the entire time reading this book going, “Oh yeah. Absolutely.” and “Exactly!”.

You should read this book AND recommend it to your friends, whether they’re sf readers, or not.

Note: David Hartwell, the author of this book, won the Hugo for best professional editor in 2006.
