A story about "Gardening When It Counts: Growing Food in Hard Times (Mother Earth News Wiser Living Series)" — 25 weeks ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This book blew my mind…there is so much information in it, and it has made me really examine how much I had adopted the popular stance in my vegetable garden, almost without thinking about it.

I hesitated to say that I have “consumed” this book, because I have read it and reread pieces of it frequently.

I’m concerned with food security and am considering growing plants for income and because of that, this book is timely for me, as well as fascinating.

How "Visions of Tomorrow: Science Fiction Predictions that Came True" changed my life — 1 year ago

I am one of the two editors of this book!!! If you have questions, comments, or whatever, I’d be happy to hear them. Even the negative stuff!

A story about "Unhinged: The Trouble with Psychiatry - A Doctor's Revelations about a Profession in Crisis" — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I read this book fairly quickly.

Before I took my child (or myself) to a psychiatrist for medication, I’d read this book, and then ask the psychiatrist some hard questions: are you paid for research by the company that makes the drugs you prescribe? Are you on a speaker’s panel? Do you do actual therapy with clients, are you simply a dispensing physician…etc.

Read the book to become a more aware and knowledgable consumer! It was both easy to read and informative.

A story about "Scapegoating in Families: Intergenerational Patterns of Physical and Emotional Abuse" — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I read this book at a recommendation from Wren. It was very helpful for me in dispelling the family “myth” that no one had mistreated me; it helped me see the subtle, but pervasive ways in which I had been scapegoated, that it was not all me being “too sensitive,” etc.

I think this is a valuable book. I looked it up in the state library system, and no libraries had it, so I donated the copy I’d bought to my local library! NH has an extensive lending system between the small town libraries, now it will be available state-wide.

A story about "Beat the Super Markets!" — 4 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This is interesting, if a little outdated book about saving money at the grocery store.

There are some (not many) data that I have not found elsewhere: the probable portion yields from 1 pound of a given type of meat or veggies, etc. I don’t agree with a lot of the yield estimates, but the fact that they’re there at all is unusual. Also, she spends some time talking about food distribution, processing before it reaches the consumer, and how that impacts the retail cost of food.

Also, there are interviews with supermarket managers, which make interesting reading, if nothing else.

In general, like almost all books/articles about this subject, it is mostly a rehash of the same old principles: eat seasonal foods, make your own rather than buy convenience food, buy in bulk when appropriate, don’t shop hungry, etc.

I’m not sorry I bought/read this, it did provide me with some new ideas, and that’s unusual, as I’ve been buying “how to save money on food” books for 30 years now!

A story about "Pseudonyms and nicknames dictionary" — 4 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Pseudonyms have always been a “hobby” of mine. When I found the 1st edition of this book in a thrift shop, I had to grab it. Years ago, I sold my pseudonym multi-volume reference, and I’ve always regretted it!

A story about "the dark is rising (series)" — 4 years ago

I bought these books in college when they were new and didn’t think that I’d like them. I ran out of reading material and read them and thought they were great!

As a bookseller, I have to say that Over Sea Under Stone is written in a style that I grew up with, and I loved it. However, younger readers that I tried to interest in the series loved the others, but not Over Sea… because of the stylistic difference.

A story about "Three Wishes & A Few More - John Morressy" — 4 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I am privileged to have been a friend of John Morressy’s. He was the local sf author and I owned his local sf bookstore. This chapbook is dedicated to me, as it was my idea, and my insistence, that got John to put it together. It is John’s last book publication before he died. He is dearly missed!
