Why it's taking me forever to finish consuming "The Good, the Bad, and the Mad: (Some Weird People in American History)" — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I love this book! I’m so wrapped up in coursework right now, though, that I haven’t been able to finish it. :( I’m so close, too! I only have about twenty pages to go!

Why it's taking me forever to finish consuming "Babur Nama (Penguin Classics)" — 2 years ago

By the time I’d finished the preface & introduction, I was almost asleep. Things didn’t pick up much when I started reading the actual journal, either.

I know this book has been translated from its original language, but I still want to take my red pen to it. The phrasing is awkward in many places, and commas pop up like land mines in the middle of the reader’s path!

I need to have this book finished by the end of next week so I have time to write a decent paper for class, but every time I pick it up, I either come across some error that bothers me so much I put it down, or I wake up three hours later with my face glued to the pages.

On the bright side, though, it does make a nice bedtime story.

A story about "Dead Poets Society" — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I had an awesome history teacher once who absolutely loved this movie. He’d show it to all of his classes every year, and jokingly encouraged us to address him, “Oh, Captain! My Captain!”

I was telling a friend about him the other day, and when they asked me what his name was, the only thing I could think was “captain”.

So, here’s to you, Captain! Keep teaching, keep changing lives, and when you retire, remember: Carpe Diam.

A story about "Oh, the Places You'll Go! (Classic Seuss)" — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

In my senior year of high school, we were required to take a parenting class, and the teacher was a little odd. She read this aloud to us (kindergarten teacher style) on the first day of class. She was so strange! The book’s good, though. :)

A story about "'Tis Pity She's a Whore and Other Plays: The Lover's Melancholy; The Broken Heart; 'Tis Pity She's a Whore; Perkin Warbeck (Oxford World's Classics)" — 2 years ago

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

‘Tis indeed a pity she’s a whore. If she hadn’t been, I wouldn’t have been required to read this for my literature class. On the bright side though, my stepmother and I were so amused by the overly-dramatic style that we’ve decided I should write an alternate ending to that particular play, and I’m really looking forward to it!

Take it out at the library before purchasing. — 2 years ago

I’ll be blunt. This is an informative, but dry read. If given a choice, I would rather read ‘The Great Cat Massacre’ again than have to slog through this one. The text books for my college classes are more exciting.

That said, it does have loads of information. It might be a bit overwhelming for a beginner, and possibly a bit boring for the more experienced, but for a novice who is looking to train a young horse, this would be an ideal reference material (although I would not suggest sitting down and reading it all at once, as you’d probably fall asleep a third of the way through).

I would not recommend it to someone trying to retrain or start an older horse, or to anyone simply looking for a good read. Although there is a section on “retraining the spoiled horse”, I did not find it very helpful, and I’m actually a little sorry that I spent money on it.

WORTH CONSUMING!

I actually found this by reading a review of it on this site, and I have to say, it was a nice surprise!

I like having music in the background when I do my work, but I get bored with hearing the same old songs over and over again. This offers the perfect solution. I can pick a genre, mood – even a decade! – and it just plays away happily while I study. There’s quite a bit of variety, too. I’ve already found several artists I enjoy, whom I’d never heard of before.

A review of "Nilgiri" — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I try to avoid black teas, as they’re usually too harsh for my taste, but when I found this on the shelf at the local shop, I couldn’t resist. It was fun to say and smelled absolutely wonderful. It was Nilgiri. I couldn’t pass that up!

It was a bit expensive, but well-worth it, in my opinion. However, I wouldn’t recommend it if the strong, dark, almost overwhelming characteristics of black teas appeal to you. Though I found it to be noticeably stronger than a green tea, it seemed to lack the punch I’ve come to associate with black teas. The flavor was strong, but remarkably smooth and enjoyable.

Given its strong flavor, this tea would stand well on its own, but a small amount of sugar doesn’t hurt. Also, try to resist the urge to over-steep this tea. It looks quite light in comparison to the usual black tea!

A review of "The Horse Behavior Problem Solver : Your Questions Answered About How Horses Think, Learn, and React" — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Jessica Jahiel obviously knows what she is doing, both with horses and with writing. I was surprised and delighted by her ability to present information in a way that was both easy to comprehend and always interesting. It was hard for me to put this book down!

This is a must read for anyone who works with horses, and a fun read for anyone who enjoys a good writer.

A review of "Dragonwell Tea" — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

At first taste, this seems like any other green tea, but the delicate flavor of this tea demands both respect and attention. This is truly a cup that must be sipped and savored.

The broad leaves made it a bit difficult to brew (I would suggest placing the loose leaves in a reusable tea bag made of cheese cloth rather than trying to fit it into an average tea ball.) but the end result was unforgettable and thoroughly enjoyable.

It did well both with and without a sweetener, and seemed to blend well with just about any type of sweetener I used. The only downside I found with this tea was the price.

As the difference between this and other green teas is very subtle, other (less expensive) green teas would work just as well (if you don’t mind a slightly harsher taste). As an occasional treat though, this tea is ideal.
