Why I recommend "Bed and Sofa" — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This is a well done silent Russian movie, from 1927, showing the consequences of a love triangle and why three is a crowd. It’s a familiar story, but with an 80 year old film you get the sense you are seeing it for the first time.

Why I recommend "Sweeney Todd" — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

If you like theatre, and you like to be entertained, then this is a movie for you. The singing, the dancing (only kidding, no dancing in this) drew you right into the story.

The blood was over-the-top, similarly to Sleepy Hollow, and while I may have covered my eyes for a couple of the neck slicings, the sound effects made sure I didn’t miss a thing.

I think this review gets it right: “Burton creates a maleficent world swathed in gothic gloss and cruel beauty. In his clever hands, Sondheim’s quick, syncopated music, acerbic wit and adult humor become an intimate, expository medium used to ‘explain’ character motivation—without compromising the power of Sondheim’s discordant notes and dissonant musical beauty.

Depp’s voice may not be suited for the stage but, on the silver screen, his full-bodied baritone makes Sweeney Todd’s unfortunate fate and vitriolic craving for vengeance throb with life and terror.”

A story about "The Song Remains the Same" — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I was practically falling asleep on my feet but was mesmerized by Robert Plant on the tele—oh boy I bet that man was a whole lotta fun. Watchin’ him sure makes my tummy feel funny.

I couldn’t stay up for the whole thing, but watched long enough with the hope that if he was the last thing I saw and heard before bed then maybe I could grab ahold of the Golden God in my dreams :

Alas, all I dreamt about was re-organizing my closet.

Why I recommend "Lust Caution (Se Jie)" — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I think that Ang Lee, translated, must mean “LONG MOVIE”.

This one is 2 hours and 38 minutes and I have to tell ya, the time just flew by. I didn’t know what this film was about—all I heard was ‘Ang Lee’ and I committed to going—and I’m so glad I did.

I think this is a brilliant movie (Tony Leung Chiu Wai is fabulous, as always, and newbie Wei Tang was simply outstanding), totally worth seeing in the theatre.

Why I recommend "The Face of Death" — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This is the sequel to Cody McFadyen’s debut novel “Shadow Man”, and is every bit as gripping as the first. It is so good, that although he could continue with a series for this main character, it would be perfect if the story stopped here.

A story about "The Log from the Sea of Cortez (Penguin Classics)" — 2 years ago

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

I’d say it was more wishy-washy then not worth consuming, but I gave it that extra negative nudge because I’m bitter at how much of a pain in the ass it was to get ahold of this book to begin with.

That being said, parts of it were funny and a lot of parts were dry, and I really enjoyed how halfway thru he sneakily wove “The Pearl” in as an Indian legend.

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

SPOILER ALERT:
This book plodded along like a decent smut novel until 3/4 of the way in when the two main characters were finally having sex and it turns out that despite being separated for 12 years and each marrying other people she somehow managed to “save” herself for him. OH COME ON!! I call fucking bullshit! HE left HER 12 years ago, marrying somebody else he supposedly got pregnant and yet she was made to feel like she needed to apologize for making a life and OHMYGOD I could throttle this author. Good romance does NOT mean sacrificing the authenticity of a woman and basing her validity upon who has been between her legs. This author should be ashamed of herself. Grrr!

A story about "Mr. Dramatic" — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Tagline: Drama queens… Prepare to meet your king.

this short manages to convey the “drama” of dating in just 12 minutes. Rather over the top, but that’s how many dates (especially blind dates) can feel.
