Deceptive Simplicity — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I read a LOT. I like to think that I know a bit about books, and how to tell if they’re well-written or not, fancying myself an author, too. One of the first things “they” tell you when you start writing is “Show, don’t tell.” That rule has held true until now. For the first time I’ve read a book where the author does a lot of “telling” of facts (“Her hair was black and straight and worn in a ponytail tied with a red ribbon”) but through those facts she is actually SHOWING the story. This is Otsuka’s debut novel, but I do not recommend other new novelists attempt to replicate this. DO NOT TRY THIS TRICK AT HOME, young authors! laughs I was amazed at how beautifully this book turned out, despite how simple it appears on the surface. It’s a real triumph, and I’m glad I had the opportunity to read it!

Why I recommend "Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison" — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This is a wonderful album, a live recording, almost conversational. Tonnes of fun. Highly recommended. A must have for a Johnny Cash fan.

Fans only? — 1 year ago

I was looking forward to reading this, as I always do with new books. I read a review that said Shreve is a rather depressing writer, so I was a little concerned, but I read on.

In the end, I can say that it is a very well written book, but I didn’t like what it was about. The characters were well expressed and believeable, but I didn’t like them as people. There was a dual-storyline which was enjoyable, but in the end I was not convinced that it was necessary or appropriate.

I didn’t really like it, but if you’re a fan of Anita Shreve, or her themes, then you probably would.
