A story about the last time I consumed "Black Book"

Black Book

by Paul Verhoeven

Also, in some angles and especially in that bleached blonde curly hair and loud red lipstick, I thought the lead actress bore an uncanny resemblance to Christina Aguilera in her ‘Candyman’ video.

Thrill-seekers (rated 3 stars)

Black Book

by Paul Verhoeven

Reminds us that life can go any way, and that the unexpected should not be unexpected. Lots of suspense, gets your eyes glued to the screen cos’ something happens in every scene. Enjoyable for those who hate anything dull and slow-paced. More of a spy-thriller than a WWII drama.

It’s pretty good, just not spectacular or particularly memorable.

Why I recommend "Cashback"

Cashback

by Sean Ellis (II)

Too many movies portray nudity in a crude and almost dismissive way. Cashback relates how the main character simply finds the female form fascinating and utterly beautiful. And as a boy he couldn’t understand or come to grips with the expressions on the faces of girls in a porn mag that belonged to his friend’s dad. Then he dishes out the highest form of compliment he can give – holding an art exhibition featuring tasteful illustrations of the girl he loves in her glorious form to express the depth of his feelings for her.

A story about "Norwegian Wood"

Norwegian Wood

by Haruki Murakami

The musings about life are thought-provoking. And there are some beautifully-written paragraphs that really struck me. Feels a little surreal as well…cos’ of the events in the book as well as how the protagonist appears isolated from everyone else and is portrayed as a lone wolf. Many a time I felt like I was in his heart and mind…and everyone else may seem near but they are actually out of reach. It’s that kind of lonely isolation that makes it a little hard to read the book because the first-person narrative is so dominant.

The entire story is pretty depressing if you’re looking for an uplifting read. But if you’re not, then it’s worthy picking up the book if you like stories that are slow and emo.

Why I recommend "Grindhouse Presents - Planet Terror"

Grindhouse Presents - Planet Terror

It’s just bad-ass cool and hilarious! And did I mention cool? I think there’s something sexy about the girl having a machine gun for a leg. I never thought a movie could make me want to have a machine gun leg as well.

And that male lead actor is hot. :)

An unforgettable film that is a must-watch.

A good sing-along (rated 3 stars)

Across the Universe (Two-Disc Special Edition)

by Julie Taymor

Well..let me start off by saying that the movie has its merits and demerits.

Merits:
- Fun to sing-along to if you’re an avid Beatles fan

- Like some have said, it’s like a piece of art. (which sometimes means it doesn’t make sense too)...so prepare for lots of experimentation and interesting scenes

- I liked Prudence’s version of ‘I wanna hold your hand’. Haha!

Demerits:
- Not a love story that gets you satisfied

- The story was not woven well enough to integrate seamlessly with the songs…like putting a cart in front of a horse, it was written in a way that the songs chosen will make some sense

- Caused quite a number of ‘huh?’s throughout the movie. First one was the brief 0.5 second scene of Prudence trying to hitch a ride before suddenly jumping to a much longer-scene of Jude trying to hitch a ride and allowing the audience to make sense of his scene but not hers. It was only after a series of scenes involving Jude, did we finally see Prudence again…and then try to connect the 0.5 second scene of her hitchhiking with the scene of her coming through some apartment window now. Second one was the odd quarrel between Sadie and her guitarist boyfriend…didn’t see how that contributed to the film…like, huh?

- The whole circus scene left me completely confounded. Whaaat?

For example, the science teacher. To me, he was basically placed halfway in the movie, to let Donnie explore questions about time-travel and most of all, to pass him that book written by Grandma Death.

The parts with the rabbit suit were hard to watch…it was too slow-paced and honestly, led me to turn myself away from the screen cos’ it wasn’t a pleasant experience looking at the rabbit and hearing it speak in a veeerrrry slooowww mannnner.

But the good part about the movie is how it makes people talk about it and discuss the themes explored.

A story about "Superbad (Rated)"

It tries too hard, the characters pissed and annoyed people off (especially the fat guy), the jokes were not funny and were blatantly crude, demeaning and stupid, the plot is draggy and vague and makes you wonder what the hell the story is about.

I have no idea why a producer decided to make this movie, whoever wrote the script ought to be shot, the directing wasn’t very good either. At the starting of the show, I wanted to walk out but it was my birthday and I already paid.

Pardon me for being harsh but yeah this movie is just upsetting, and aptly…SUPERBAD. Right, just my two cents worth.
