Rome: The Complete Series

I started watching Rome (both seasons) Saturday night. Granted, it was late when I started, but I got so caught up in the characters and the story that I could not stop. I sat up all night and all the next day until I had gone through every episode. I actually watched one episode twice because the DVD player shut down and I couldn’t find my remote to advance past the one I had already watched. 24 hours of Rome and it was amazing.

The sets and costumes alone are worth watching this for, but who is going to watch 24 hours of anything just for the visuals? They are, of course, fuzzy on historical details as is any movie since if they showed it the way it really happened, this sucker would have taken twice as much air time and not really added all that much to anything. But the series captures quintessentially the flavor and textures of the ancient Roman empire—the attitudes, morals, values, the savagery and casual brutality. In fact, beware, there are some parts of this that are so brutal, it is painful to watch.

At the end, I’m kind of glad I sat through it all in one whack. I can’t imagine having to stretch the thing out over two seasons. But I also felt a little pole-axed when it was over.
