Putnam

Putnam wrote a Bible-sized tome about what’s wrong with America. Bowling Alone is about civic engagement and while I felt the charts and graphs were painfully boring, I liked his message and his methods were more thorough than anything of its kind. As a soc. major in college, I was able to get through it without trouble, but I wouldn’t recommend it to everyone. The cover looks way more fun than the reading is. That being said, Putnam reaches some important conclusions and the book inspired me to, at the very least, bullshit with my neighbors once in a while, throw a block party or two and, if not drag myself to a public meeting, at least send letters to congressman when an issue concerns me. Putnam indites us all for a crime we are all guilty of: not really giving a crap about stuff and losing touch with our friends and neighbors.

Hank, the lead character, is the ultimate anti-hero. This hard-drinking, fight-starting, impulsive sex addict demonstrates why being bad is so good. In this world, the bad guy wins. Long live the bad guy. David Duchovny is no longer Fox Mulder as far as I’m concerned. Now, I can only picture him with a cigarette in his mouth, a glass of whiskey in his hand and a naked chick on his lap. This show was a real treat.

I was super impressed with Will Farrell and I loved the whole carpe diem message it gave. As far as romcoms go (and I call this a romcom) this tops the list. A great movie to watch with a female and still be entertained.

He throws in some rock beats and breaks out pop culture references from things like comic books, anime and video games. His music also takes on some social issues, so for me he fits in with other up-and-coming indie rappers. But he’s just so thug at the same time.

More deeply person and insightful lyrics. More gaudy bragging. More danceable beats, distorted vocal melodies, spacey keyboard licks and memorable rhymes than ever. Late Registration will always hold a place in my heart, but Graduation is growing on me. Flashing Lights and The Good Life are instant classics. You’ve heard half of these songs on the radio. The other half you’ll love once you hear them. Worth consuming!

A review of "First Impressions of Earth"

First Impressions of Earth

by The Strokes

I never understood all the derogatory remarks about the “The” bands (i.e. The Stroke, The White Stripes, The Hives, etc.). The Strokes put out a third good album. I have yet to find any songs that ring in my head quite like “Reptilia” on the previous album and “Hard to Explain” off the one before that, so I think I owe this another listen. The Strokes brought something fresh to rock music in 2000 (2002?) and they are have really honed their signature sound. Expect more grungey, jangley, danceable pop rock from First Impressions of Earth. If you’re already a fan, you will not be disappointed. If you’re not, you should reconsider.
