It just wasn’t a compelling read :(

This is the Vernor Vinge I remember from Fast Times At Fairmont High.
Highly. Recommended.
This book gets more and more gripping as you read it, only to come to an abrupt anticlimax and kind of peter out. You have the impression China never got to fully explore some aspects of the plot, that he had to finish it and publish it before it took over his life.
Well worth the read.
I love it so far, I read the sequel before this one, and its amazing the level of detail the author has created in this world.
I’m about half way through it, and this thing is bloody scaring me.
It’s so dark and full of menace!
I was wrong! I was foolish! I was stupid! And now I’m finished. This is a beautiful book – and if you ever wonder how much it has influenced modern culture, read it and then watch The Simpsons.
I like this so far, I can see why its regarded as a classic, but it isn’t as good as its reputation suggested.
I loved it. Sure, it’s no Snow Crash, lacking the humour, but it’s still a great read.
The first in a series of ever increasingly good novels.
I recommend the whole series strongly!
