Why I recommend "Pagan Christianity?: Exploring the Roots of Our Church Practices" — 44 weeks ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This book will probably challenge everything you’ve ever known “church” to be. After finishing it I feel like I’m left with more questions than answers and the feeling of, “Where do I (or we the church) go from here?”

A Great Conclusion to "The Omnivore's Dilemma" — 47 weeks ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I felt unsatisfied after reading “The Omnivore’s Dilemma.” I thought, “Now what?” I think that “In Defense of Food” would have worked really well within “The Omnivore’s Dilemma” because I don’t think “In Defense of Food” stands as strongly on its own. I enjoyed “The Omnivore’s Dilemma” much more, but this book was a quick read.

Why I recommend "Watership Down: A Novel" — 49 weeks ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This was my favorite movie as a child, but I had forgotten the name of the movie over the years. This year I discovered that my favorite childhood movie was indeed called “Watership Down.” I made it a quest to read the book and as I read it the childhood images flooded back into my memory.

Within the first few pages the adventure already begins. The action does not stop throughout the whole book. I have not felt such urgency to complete a book since I read “Tender is the Night” by F. Scott Fitzgerald nearly two years ago. Needless to say I have spent every free moment of the last two days reading it. I do not regret it. This is now easily one of my favorite books.

Read the graphic novel. — 51 weeks ago

The graphic novel goes into much better detail. You’re better off just sticking to that, even though some of the animation was kind of fun.

Biased Bush-hater — 1 year ago

It is biased. I guess that’s OK. The book also makes it obvious that the author doesn’t like Bush. I’m OK with that too. I understand the importance that my voice and vote have in this country. I understand the importance of staying informed and keeping up with the news. I think the author tried to make correlations where they don’t exist. The book was also very poorly edited. I feel like the publisher was in a rush to release it. It is hard for me to trust a book that has so many mistakes. I could also tell when whole truths were not being told, only partial facts in order to support the author’s point of view. This book reminded me of my role as a citizen of the United States, but that is all. This book as been in my possession for over a year and it was not worth my money and barely worth my time.

The book is better. The movie wrongfully portrays many of the real life characters. Bauby only had 2 children, but the director really wanted to cast a third child because he really liked the child. Bauby’s girlfriend was portrayed as a coward in the movie, as not being able to bear to see him. Bauby’s girlfriend actually routinely visited him in the hospital. The mother of Bauby’s children had a large say in how this movie was made, hence she was made to look as though Bauby was still in love with her during his locked-in-syndrome even though he didn’t. Bauby wasn’t driving when he had his stroke, but rather his chauffer was. As you can see, many of these changes were made to create a more dramatic effect.

The movie was beautifully made, but it strays from the truth. That bothers me. I also wish Explosions in the Sky would have had a song in the movie and not just in the trailer. :)

Waste of time, but not a complete waste. — 1 year ago

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

I don’t know why I let my husband and friend pick out this movie. It started out terrible. Then it got a little funny. After that I was just plain bored and decided to let my eyes close. Before I knew it the final credits were playing. I’m not as fortunate as those who have never seen this, but at least I didn’t stay awake for the whole thing. That truly would have been unfortunate.
