Why I recommend "What I Mean to Say Is Goodbye" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This is music for grown-ups. It’s for people who have been there, done that, made mistakes, made them again, moved on, got lost, found something special once or twice, fell in love, got comfortable, and called it good.

Why I recommend "Nutrition Action Healthletter" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Not only is this slim periodical packed full of first-class nutrition information that will change your life for the better, but it’s funny, too. The “Food Porn” column on the back cover makes it worth every penny.

Nutrition Action is published by the Center for Science in the Public Interest, a non-profit group advocating “for nutrition and health, food safety, alcohol policy, and sound science.” There is no space given to advertising. The reporting is excellent, relevant, and based on primary sources in the literature.

The current issue focuses on men’s health. That’s right guys, this health letter ain’t just for the ladies. For new subscribers, $10 gets you 10 issues. Do it.

Why I recommend "An Inconvenient Truth" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

If you are decent human being who believes in doing the right thing, then this movie will either change how you think or reinvigorate your desire to act as a steward of Planet Earth. Everyone should see this movie. It should be broadcast on network TV every year/month/week, it should be shown to every school-age child. It should be shown to every city, state, county politician and every member of congress. Every CEO of every publicly-held corporation should be required to see it (and sign-off on seeing it as part of Sarbanes-Oxley (haha)). When it comes out on DVD, I will not buy a copy just for myself but many more copies for all my extended family members.

A story about "Anniemal" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

The first time I listened to Anniemal I was like, “Ugh, too pop-y.” Annie has that sweet little girl voice that makes me roll my eyes while feeling slightly embarrassed. However, subsequent listens have changed my mind about the music. I can’t put my finger on it, but there’s something going on in these supremely catchy pop songs, something insidious and delightful. I’m hoping my infatuation will be very short-lived.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Can snapshots be artful? I think so. If you think so too, check out American Surfaces.

Why it's taking me forever to finish consuming "Smart and Simple Financial Strategies for Busy People" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Even though it’s been on my consuming list for weeks, I only just started it last night. I really don’t like this type of book and the subject matter couldn’t be more boring to me, but I need some advice on managing my nickels.

So far it’s not that bad.

A story about "Springtime Can Kill You" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I really love this recording. It’s even better than Escondida. Jolie Holland’s music is like from a hazy dream. I feel as if I’ve always had her voice singing to me softly in the background of my mind.

She’s playing The Triple Door tomorrow night and I won’t be there, goddammit.

A story about "Fox Confessor Brings the Flood" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Neko Case’s voice is almost too perfect; the clarity is a bit unreal. With this recording she gives it the full reverb treatment resulting in a gratuitous velvety smoothness. But the songwriting is first-rate and sometimes the whole package delivers a shiver down your spine.

A story about "Howl's Moving Castle" — 3 years ago

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

Great animation but the cheesy story and dialogue made me lose interest.
