A story about "Mark Rothko: The Works on Canvas" — 3 years ago
Rothko is not a colorist..Don’t dare look at his work and talk about the pretty colors..rather his work was a work of abstract expression it was an experience.I don’t think the painting was a reflecting of an experience but rather something one experienced.
Rothko wanted to paint as he said “the tradegy, doom and….” i can’t remember what else. but when you look at this look within the vertically aligned rectangular forms and gather the tradgey that Rothko lived during his childhood. Now I may be taking jumps and believe me I am fucking failing my art history class. In fact my art professor asks me if I write my paper on drugs but I say look at these paintings and identify with what its evoking. The process of painting was more the act of expressionsim I think this was an emotional expreienced. You can feel his strict orthodox upringing perhaps in the clean structure. For its when his mother died that he became so ridgid, his work changed from the more violent arachaic to the two-three rectangular classical period of form he is known for. ahh no more.
