A story about "Mrs Palfrey at the Claremont (Virago Modern Classics)" — 6 days ago
Excellent. I need to get my hands on more of her books.

Arahsae / Sarah

This took me forever to read but there was so much Good Stuff in it and it made me think about photography in shiny new ways.
Too much angst, not enough story.
Of course, if I was a male teenager full of angst, this probably would resonate more.
Fun and funny and touching without being sappy.
You’ll want to read this all in one sitting!
Lots of potential here, but it reads like the first novel it is—or is as far as I can tell!
Overall, I enjoyed the book, although it only worked when I approached it with a grain of salt—the narrator of the story breaks in to speak to the reader and overuses adjectives and cliches, giving the story an ornate “Victorian” feel; it is kind of gimmicky in that sense, but I think that’s the point. You just have to roll with it.
The characters are quirky and interesting, but flat. There were hints at their background and history; this was not developed. The title misled me as to the point of the story and left me disappointed. The climax was … anti-climactic—I feel like the whole thing could either have been tightened up into a novella or given more depth and lengthened.
Despite the shortcomings, it is a fun book and I will certainly take a look at the upcoming sequel (?), The Domino Men.
I read the sequel to this years ago and it was nice to find out how Turtle and Taylor got together. It was quick read with great characters—this is much lighter than her Poisonwood.
Of course, I’ve forgotten everything that happened in the second book; now I can re-read it with a solid foundation!
I would have loved to save this book for an upcoming long flight, but it was too good and I ate it right up.
I wish Eden had written many more novels. This was recommended to me as being “Austenish” and I agree!
Very funny but also quite serious and depressing in spots.
