YES! YES! I’M FINISHED!!
jumpy narrative, bounces across too much time and too many characters.
Not as well written as Simon Winchester’s “Crack at the Edge of the World.” This book is about the New Madrid earthquakes of 1811-1812 & the slow rise of seismology afterwards. It was ok, but again, not well written. Informative if you want to know what happen during the earthquakes.
If you like Krakatoa, you might like this. Pretty much the same thing. Less on the actual day of the earthquake & its aftermath (or maybe Krakatoa was much more interesting), but a lot about the science of earthquakes and the new theories floating around on plate tectonics. He ends it with his trip to Alaska (he laments about the presence of Wal-Mart in the Yukon’s capital), which would have been more interesting if he wrote more about the history of earthquakes (especially in Anchorage) in Alaska rather than on the roadtrip himself.
Otherwise I liked it.
the title song was the only good song. otherwise it sux big time.
didn’t really help me, but might be interesting to read later when i have time.
deals with the cairene and sana’ain dialects. not really about FusHa or darja.
Focused mostly on english dialects, not exactly the information i was looking for.
good only if you want to learn the oran accent of algerian arabic. also, it’s a bit difficult to make out how to actually pronounce it.
A series of fictionalized narratives (where fact and fiction blend) on the meaning and power of the ghost dance. Different points of views, different times in history. Not an easy read, but still good.
