Pretty but boring — 28 weeks ago

There’s some stiff competition when it comes to animation. Even the funniest animationmovie’s (Shrek, Nemo,...) bring some sort of point across. Being different, love, family… For Despereaux, I think the main theme is bravery.

But at the end I’m not really sure what bravery is. Despereaux is brave because he’s not afraid of anything. So being brave is being fearless? Some would call that careless… Also, the rat Roscuro at the end is brave, for rescuing the princess out of a situation he put her into. Then there’s the story of the princess who lost her mother, the king who mourns his wife, a father who lost his daughter, the maid who dreams of being a princess, the super chef who’s forbidden to make his trademark soup… It’s just too much basically. This story has a lot of potential, I did really like the style of animation, but it misses focus.

One more thing I must rant about. The guy made from veggies and fruits… what’s up with him? What’s his point? Besides spiking the soup and running Despereaux to the rat world? I could find absolutely no reason why he couldn’t have been replaced by the cook or.. well basically any character not made from carrots and cherries… The rest of the movie could have been absolutely perfect, but this completely useless character would have still ruined it for me.

Watchable — 28 weeks ago

This is one of those types of movie that’s not great, but if it happens to be on and you have nothing better to do, it’s fine to watch. As stated below it’s an interesting peep at women in the 1950’s and the changes going on. The acting is good. The storyline just doesn’t grab you and pull you in.

Disappointing — 29 weeks ago

Wow, this movie just did absolutely nothing for me. Which is arre for movies with Julia Roberts in them. Though they may not always be the most brilliant scripts ever, I do love those romantic Pretty Woman type comedy’s. I’m trying to figure out why I didn’t like it, I’m thinking one of the reasons was that there was little depth to the relationships between all the characters, I would have like to understand the weird relationship between the two sisters more, or to see what the friendship of Kiki and Eddie was like before. Actors are nice to look at, some bits made me smile, but there are considerably better movies to watch.

Hey, she can act! — 30 weeks ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This movie reminded me of Girl interrupted. Not because of the contents of the movie or anything, but because that was the movie where I discovered Angelina Jolie could do more then strike a sexy pose in hot pants and a tank top as she saved the world from another unbelievable plot of destruction. This is the movie where I saw that Anne Hathaway is more than a grown up Disney Teen. She managed to portray the confused, egocentric Kim in a way that she is very likable even when she’s stupid or annoying. Excellent.

The movie as a total is interesting, I like the weird relation between the girls and their mom, and the whole hush hush attitude towards the family’s history. At times the movie does lose its speed a little, the start is a bit slow I felt, but all in all a very interesting movie I very much enjoyed watching.

Watchable, but not spectacular — 31 weeks ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

A good movie for mindless watching on a rainy day or a lazy evening. The bit at the end with the glass shattering was pretty, and all in all I liked the idea of mixing fairytales up.

The movie is predictable though (who didn’t expect the lone ranger there’d be a girl, or that wolfy was dear old dad). And some of the character turns were a bit too sudden for my liking. Also, the ending was overtly happy. I prefer the gory, sad fairy tales myself.

WORTH CONSUMING!

...you aren’t all that shocked by the shocking revelation that, yes, soylent green is people. This movie is still pretty watchable though. Some highlights for me:
- the fact that in 2022 they have amazing videogames where you shoot at rockets with pixels.
- How our man Thorn is stealing and using someone else’s ‘furniture’ but is somehow still the honorable cop.
- riot control through scoops. very inventive. Don’t know why our police squad didn’t think of that. Especially like the blood splattering scene at the end there.
- The wonderfully fake blood.
- The ceremony for the dying. Nice to know they get some nice images and classical music before becoming green chips.
- The scene with the bodies covered in sheets rolling down the conveyor. Creepy. Really.

Bored me — 31 weeks ago

The story idea is interesting, but it just doesn’t hold the attention. It was on TV and I kept zapping away. I don’t think it’s the acting. Admittedly I’m not a big Costner fan and Jennifer keeps getting stuck in these Rachel like rolls. But in this case I think the plot is to blame. I can’t even point out something that is specifically bad about the plot because I just couldn’t be bothered to invest in it that much.

If you want a chick flick, watch Pretty Woman (again).

True stories as they used to be — 31 weeks ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Three faces of Eve is not a movie I’d quickly watch again, but it was an entertainng watch. What I especially found funny was a ‘true story’ movie in the black and white times and how a man gave a lengthy speech about the movie beforehand. Nowadays ‘true stories’ are brushed up and the people in them are made into heroes. This was much more of an account of events. Which made it slightly boring at times. But still an interesting movie.

Fantastic — 33 weeks ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This is such a fantastic movie. The acting is great, it’s all very well set up, switching between the bunker and the fall of Berlin. The bit where the kids are poisoned had me shaking. It’s so weird how obsessed people can get and how far they will go. The only thing I found slightly hard is to keep track of all the players, there’s so many officers of all sorts wandering about and I couldn’t remember who was who all the time. But that was easily overlooked. An absolute must see.

Feel good movie that doesn't feel good — 33 weeks ago

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

I was surprised to find I did not like this movie. At all. I thought it would be some nice little feel good movie on some singing girls making it to the top. But I didn’t get that feel good feeling. And then the predictability of the plot gets annoying. I don’t think I had a problem with the acting. Jennifer Hudson was good and Beyonce didn’t have me thinking ‘hey that’s Beyonce’ every time, which is an accomplishment of sorts. It’s just that the script sucks (in my not so humble opinion). It hasn’t quite figured out whether it’s a movie or a musical. Every time it stages a musical song it had me fast forwarding. The relationship between the different characters aren’t fully worked out, which had me thinking stuff like ‘Why does Deena end up with Curtis after he dumps (supposedly close friend) Effie’.

It’s a shame cause it could have been an interesting story, a colored singing group rising in the charts around the time as Martin Luther King’s speech and race riots.
