WORTH CONSUMING!

This is a nice movie. It’s not fantastic, but there’s a revenge scene at the end which is historical. Possibly, guys will like it even better because it’s about soccer and guys for some reason really like seeing other guys kicking a ball around.

WORTH CONSUMING!

I was always a fan of Annie MG Schmidt, but when reading through this biography. which is largely a summery of all her work, you can’t help but be in awe. Plays, children’s books, literature, musicals, poems and even an opera. She kept writing up until the end, even though she was mostly blind. It’s also interestign to see how she took things from her own life and thred them through her work. Her infatuation with a young gay man, which resulted int he gorgeous song ‘Iedereen was zo’ (everybody was like that). And even a play on a suicidal man (largely based on her husband at the end of his life).

The biography left me resolute to go digging through bookstores in search of more of her work for my bookcase. This of course is mostly due to Annie MG Schmidt and not so much to the biography. But the biography itself is also well written. It’s really just a summery of her life and work, but it is done in a way which makes it an easy read. Well done.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Went to this movie on a whim, went for a drink with some colleagues an we figured we might as well catch a movie. This one played at 8.

Very good movie, was thoroughly wrapped up in it at no time. Reminded me a bit of Dutch movies, in the sense that there is a good dose of sex and violence which does have a point (character building, creating tensions) but that in my opinion the story could have done without.

The majority of men in this movie turn out to be basterds and most women are in some way or other abused. No skipping around disney style moments in this movie. Creeped me out a bit. But that means it was done well, so thumbs up for this one.

Beautiful, just some threads missing — 19 weeks ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

The animation is gorgeous and I love the story idea of some parallel world with the buttons. Pretty near to perfect. Of course, the reason for the buttons or why the other mother does what she does is unexplained, but it doesn’t need to be, it is as it is. The only thing missing for me was that on some occasions there are smoe tiny stiches missing that would make the story run a bit smoother. The last bit, from where Coraline goes to sleep on the marbles to the end, seems a bit rushed. Like the movie had to be cut down in size and there is this very hasty last blurb of action or something.

Apart from that, lovely movie, I wouldn’t mind seeing it again once or twice :)

Good things, bad things — 22 weeks ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Good things: Mystique (adored her) and Famke as Jean. And the nice special effects and powers and everything of course.

Bad things: Rogue, especially in the Final Stand doing that thing that I can’t mention in a review due to spoilers. Rogue was always my favorite X-women and though I did like the actress this wasn’t ‘my’ Rogue. Besides Mystique all the women were a little on the followy side. Could anyone tell Storm was officially in charge during that last battle? Also thought the way they took out Magneto was sort of on the hypocritical side.

A review of "Mississippi Burning" — 24 weeks ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Loved the opening shot, with the two water fountains right next to each other connected to the same waterpipe. Made it worth the watching just for that.

It’s an interesting movie, though the final conviction of the KKK killing gang is achieved through lies and deception on part of the FBI. Which makes you wonder what the moral of the story is (besides that segregation sucks of course). An eye for an eye sorta thing. Apparently the law abiding ways of agent Ward aren’t enough to outsmart racist bastards and you have to get down and dirty too. I didn’t find that idea too appealing.

WORTH CONSUMING!

The story is very interesting, the movie can’t really be faulted, but doesn’t excite either. A very hollywoodesque style hero story.

Bus boycots and equality — 25 weeks ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This movie was on TV late last night. I was zapping around and this one drew me in. It reminded me how little I know about this period of time and the struggle for equal rights. That all people are equal, no matter what skin color, religion or sexual preference, is such a natural thing for me. Which is good, of course, but it’s also good to be reminded what people went through to make this possible. Impressive bit of history and a very good movie.

Unfortunately I missed the beginning of the movie, so I can’t judge it in its entirety.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Heel fijn boekje.

Pretty horses and nice scenery and everything… But could he say ‘partner’ any more often?
