Sharp and short (rated 5 stars)

Koerikoeloem

by Tjitske Jansen

Good thing about poetry. It’s sharp and short. If it’s done well obviously, cause it can also be long and tedious. But Koerikoeloem is one of the good ones.

One of the many nice quotes:
“Er was mijn vader die als kind een keer met zijn trommel achter de fanfare aanliep. Hij marcheerde en trommelde vol overgave mee. Opeens zag hij zichzelf lopen, zag dat mensen hem zagen, schaamde zich, en bleef in schaamte staan terwijl de fanfare verder liep”.

Interesting but somewhat out there (rated 4 stars)

Supersize Me

by Morgan Spurlock

What I liked about this documentary is that it shows the effects continuously bad eating has on you. Not just on the outside, but also in you cholesterol, liver functions etc.

What I did not like is that it oversimplifies the problem of obesity by pointing the blame at fast food. Which, yes, is one of he causes. But theres more to fat than that. The second thing I had trouble with is drawing a conclusion from 1 month of only eating McDOnalds. I’m not American, so maybe our realities differ somewhat, but still I’m sure no American only survives on McDonalds. So, after a month of only eating McD: what has he proven exactly?

I though the idea of suing a company like McD is silly, because you decide what you eat. One argument I did find compelling though: McDonalds focuses very strongly on kids. I never much considered that, but found that an interesting point.

Very judgemental

Religulous

by Larry Charles

Now first off, let me say I’m an atheist. The thing with atheist though as that we have quite a bad name for claiming we are mightier than thou cause we’re smarter since we don’t believe in fairytale and bibles.

After seeing religious I kinda got what those annoyed religious people were on about. Bill states religion is bad because it judges the people who don’t believe. But at the same time, this seems to be what he is preaching. I found this somewhat hypocritical.

Still, at times it is quite funny, if you ignore the attacky bits. Also found it interesting that there were a lot of Dutch people tossed in the mix. Sadly it was mostly Geert Wilders type people or people stoned out of their brain.

Jane Austen with some added zombies (rated 2 stars)

I love the cover, I love the idea itself, but a whole book of it is just too much. I had hoped the (re)writer would have gotten creative with the plot somewhere, but the plot in no place really differs from the Jane Austen novel. There’s just some zombies dragged in and for some reason to fight zombies you have to be a master in the oriental arts. The lame jokes about balls made me cringe.

I don’t regret buying the book, but only because it looks cool in my bookcase and is a good conversation starter.

I got sucked in right away and stayed up 2 hours beyond my bedtime to watch it.

This documentary leaves you haunted and a little freaked. It starts off with the death of Andrew Bagby (in his late twenties I believe) who was shot 5 times. There are very clear indications that the ex-girlfriend (who he just broke up with the day before) is the killer. She gets arrested, then released, then a trial starts, throughout which it turns out she’s pregnant. And it gets even more bizarre. It’s a story that’s really too insane to be real, but unfortunately it is real.

It’ll make you shake your head at the legal system, at the insanity of people, and mostly it will leave you stunned by the bravery of others (Andrews parents) who deal with the entire situation with unmeasurable strength and dignity.

This one was too serious. If it had been tacky and over the top it would have been good, now it was adequate.

Funny (rated 3 stars)

Looking for Erik

by Ken Loach

This is a nice movie. It’s not fantastic, but there’s a revenge scene at the end which is historical. Possibly, guys will like it even better because it’s about soccer and guys for some reason really like seeing other guys kicking a ball around.
