Vastly different than I expected.

First I am shocked SHOCKED by how incredibly boring some of these shots are. Especially the long stretches with no dialogue (and no soundtrack either).

Then I start laughing as terms like “rock marooned” and “dirt mattress” start spilling forth from their lips. Not to spoil the only hilarious moments of this movie for you.

I don’t know what to make of it. There are some visually interesting shots but… I was honestly just hoping for a lot more dialogue to keep my mind entertained while I focused my eyes on a sewing project, and this was obviously not the right choice for that purpose.

If you really like going on long boring hikes in the wilderness and sitting around a dark campfire for hours with nothing else going on, this may be the movie for you. Unfortunately I don’t seem to have the attention span for either of those things.

Yet another Gus Van Sant Darwin cycle.
