Having just stumbled across this film last week I have to say it is now in my top 10 desert island films. So much has already been written about it so I will just add that the interplay between the characters and some truly funny moments were woven together with an ease that kept the film going through to the end. I wished I had seen this at the Cinema.. I now am going to read the book.

This is one of those movies that people either love or hate. I think the dry humor turns some people off. Also, if you’re a teenager, you’re probably not going to get it. Some people find the subject matter of wine (in any format) pretentious, so it probably lost a few others with the subject matter. I’m not at an age where I am headed toward a mid-life crisis, but there was still a lot to enjoy about the film.
The two characters were roommates in college, and it reminded me of how college is really the only time in your life when you’re thrown in with a mishmesh of people and told you have to live together. Sometimes you stay friends with the most unlikely people, and while they may drive you crazy at times, they add a dimension to your life that you wouldn’t otherwise have—teaching you about yourself, and sometimes leading to great, random roadtrips.

I didn’t think I was going to like this, but I really really did. The concept was cool, and several scenes were actually very nostalgic for me. No, I’m not a middle aged man (or woman), but the whole relationship and friendship aspect was very familiar to me. Loved the dry humor that overtoned the movie, not to mention the fact that it made me want to become a wine connoisseur, just so I could be hella classy!
