John Grogan opens his life to his readers while honoring his unforgettable dog, Marley, and Marley’s place in his and his family’s lives. I finished this book in 1 day. I could not put it down. If you are an animal lover or not, you will enjoy this book. It is heartbreaking, not only about what the reader knows is the inevitable when one owns a pet but also with the challenges that take place in people’s lives in general. The book focuses on the challenges of owning Marley but also on life: being newlyweds, starting a family, changing jobs, going through depression, all that was made more bearable by a dog that just enjoyed being a dog. There are moments when I cried through empathy but also moments where I laughed and remembered the antics of my family’s adventures in pet ownership. They really are member of the family if you let them be.
