Too quirky, and yet not quirky enough. Why use pumpkin growing as a metaphor for life? After reading this book I still do not know. But the writing is fine, and Ellie is an appealing character—if a little too apt to collapse into despair and wait for her nascent boyfriend to pull her backbone back up.
