The obvious danger of attempting to remake such a classic film is that it will be compared in every way to the original. I was a bit skeptical about how Steve Martin might reprise Peter Sellars’ zany detective role, but he did a wonderful job, as did director Shawn Levy in honoring Blake Edwards. From the initial cartoon credits to the inevitable triumph of bumbling over evil-much to the chargrin of Dreyfuss (played remarkably well by Kevin Kline)-this movie is a complete treat. It even has better eye candy than the original, in the breathtaking beauty of Beyonce Knowles. The gags in this film have been updated to include cell phones and email, nonexistent in the Sellars era, and are guaranteed to have you LOLing if not ROFLing. See it!
