Jackson is one of my all time favorite authors.
She is so good at evoking a creepy feeling, so good at making ordinary things utterly disturbing.
One of the things that make her stories so creepy is that we’ve all met people like the people in her stories. Or we’ve been in situations where we weren’t sure if we were interpreting the other person’s actions/motives correctly.
There are 26 stories in the collection. Of them, Seven Types of Ambiguity, is hands down one of the most haunting short stories out there. Not as dramatic as The Lottery but just as powerful.
