WORTH CONSUMING!

It’s far from perfect, but I found this film really enjoyable. It helps that I’m intrigued by the whole concept of time travel and what ifs (actually reading a non-fiction book that discusses the genuine theory of time travel – perhaps why I chose this film!), and despite logical flaws a-plenty I rather liked the set up here.

Young Evan doesn’t have the happiest of lives, particularly as his best friend is possibly being abused by her father, and her brother is ever-so-slightly deranged. Oh yeah – and his own father is in a mental institute, for some unnamed condition. Is it related to Evan’s black outs, where in moments of stress he loses all memory of events?

Fast forward several years, and Evan is making a success out of studying pyschology and memory when he inadvertantly stumbles across startling information about his childhood black-outs…

The whole film is based around the idea that one small change (eg a butterfly flapping its wings in China) can have huge and unexpected consequences (eg hurricane in Montana). Suited me to a ‘t’ – I rather like Chaos theory! The film also made me think of The Time Traveler’s Wife (movie coming soon, apparently!) – an unfortunate comparison in terms of story quality, but it never hurts a story to remind me of a favourite book.

The cast are adequate, with Ashton Kutcher managing not to be annoying (surprisingly!), and the low-budget nature of the film allows a certain leeway, and a little charm.

So. Not to everyone’s tastes, but I liked it.
