A story about this — 5 years ago
With Mel Brooks’ play coming to town starring David Hasselhof, I thought it might be a good idea to see the screen version. Hard to believe this movie is nearly 40 years old now. Zero Mostel is a riot as hack producer Max Bialystock, fleecing little old ladies out of their savings to put on one-night stands of the stage variety. Gene Wilder plays crooked accountant Leo Bloom, the producer’s sidekick, to a T. They conspire to put on a Broadway flop called Springtime for Hitler, but the results are just the opposite of what they plan. I just can’t imagine Hasselhof in the lead after watching this. Now I really need to get some tickets and see how he pulls it off in front of a live audience.
