I know a lot of people 20 or so years older than me who’ve been reading John Updike or Philip Roth or whoever since they were students and look forward to the new book every year or two. I feel the same way about Patrick Gale. He’s a wonderful writer, astonishingly overlooked. He compares very favorably with writers like Alan Hollinghurst.
