WORTH CONSUMING!

Philip K. Dick redefined the nature of destiny in his short story “The Adjustment Team.” This adaptation brings star power to the mix. As Sci-Fi stories go, it is strictly old school. The use of doors as transportation portals is the only special effect, if you can call it that. But it works because Matt Damon has charisma, and Emily Blunt does a good job of following in his wake. Not great, not disappointing.

Despite the at times sweet love-angle in this film, it lacks more than the terrific Philip K. Dick hook. David Norris, up-and-coming American politician, meets girl and deviates from The Plan. Prey tell, what is The Plan? Well, who knows? It’s some plan that Norris is supposed to follow, and there are some very narrow-minded people intended to see that he – and everybody else on the planet – follows The Plan. Some chasing follows, a lot of boring times following the stereotypical image of The American Campaigning Male Politician Aiming For The Senate. I wish Terence Stamp were directed better, and that the script had been more varied. Visually, the film works well with the bleak, metallic tones. All in all: works on paper (except for script) but lost my focus early on. I’d prefer something like “The Manchurian Candidate” more, considering the setting.
