I first saw the second Cube film, Hypercube, and since it left me confused, I thought watching the first one would clear things up. Wrong presumption completely – if possible, I was even more confused afterwards. What was the point of everything? Where is the cube? What happens in the end?

I like the idea of the film, the story is fascinating even though it’s so simple. The execution, however, was a bit disappointing. Not much character development (not that much depth in them either), the plot was too predictable (except for the end – that was probably the best part of the whole film) and in whole the film left too many questions open. I like films that don’t explain everything or point things blatantly to the viewer, but when there’s nothing to hold on to, the film becomes too abstract and incomprehensible.

I would have wanted to like this film more, but not being able to get a better grasp of it, I have to say that it was ‘just okay’.

WORTH CONSUMING!

This was a very good movie. I enjoyed it from beginning to end. This is a movie I’d love to watch again.

Good idea, could have been better — 1 year ago

The central premise is a bunch of people stuck in a series of interconnected cube-like rooms, which may or may not be booby trapped. They have to escape. The acting (by a bunch of actors I didn’t recognise) is pretty good, however the characters aren’t much different from your typical bunch-of-guys-stuck-together sci-fi flick – there’s the agressive psycho one, the clever one, the sensible one, the emotional one and the totally mad rain-man one.
As usual, agressive psycho and emotional characters screw things up for the sensible people. The brainy lass figures it all out using the standard sci-fi “I’m a child prodigy” technique. The end. Except for the end bit which I’ll leave a secret.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Amazing what drama can be created with a miniscule budget. Just drop seven apparently unrelated people into a maze made up of moving cubes and throw in some booby traps. Kill off one character quickly, and make the remaining ones an idiot savante, a cop, a con, a mathematically inclined student, an architectual designer, and a nicotine-deprived medical doctor, then see who survives not only the maze but also each other. We never find out who is behind the cube or why these people were chosen, or if there are any others. But it’s hard to stop watching because something is happening or about to happen all the time. I’m looking forward to seeing the sequel later this month.

WORTH CONSUMING!

I wanted to see this at a film festival, but a friend of mine at the time coerced me not to, which I’ll never forget. I saw this one late night and loved it, as I knew I would, then several years later, on an impulse buy, I saw it on the shelves and purchased it immediately. It doesn’t have many features, but it’s the movie that’s the draw. Maybe they’ll come out with a special edition!
