Really, this is a pretty perfect example of what it is: an 80s fantasy/action movie. The story isn’t so great, but it’s fascinating seeing the differences in film making over a quarter of a century ago. It doesn’t look ‘low budget’ as such, and yet you can tell there was so often only one take possible. Apparently Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sandahl Bergman HAD to do their own stunts – and yes, you can tell! – as there were no suitable body doubles.

Talking of Arnie, this and Terminator are the two most perfect pieces of casting for the now-Governor. I’ve heard that his commentry on the DVD for this is unintentionally side-splitting.

Ultimately, I think this is worth viewing as much for what it tells us about the early 80s as being pretty much exactly what it sets itself out to be. Can you imagine the re-make? It wouldn’t be half as fun!
