Powerful, Stunning, Brilliant — 8 years ago

Although this is an incredible movie, it does get off to a very slow start and sets you up with a bunch of lifeless characters you don’t care about. However, as the story progresses, it turns into the best thriller of the last few years. You will be on the edge of your seat, doing your best not to fast forward to find out what happens next. I don’t know that I’ve ever actually watched a movie that made my heart pound with anticipation the way that Match Point did.

Give it a chance. It will blow you away.

Ripley in London — 8 years ago

Despite obvious rip-offs from Highsmith’s Ripley novels, the story deftly manages to illustrate the importance of luck over talent when it comes to getting away with murder (and lesser sins).

And it stars the lovely Scarlett Johansson which should be reason enough to give it a look-see.

this movie made me feel ill, but i still liked it.

Nothing new here — 8 years ago

This movie had nothing new to offer. Its story was so predictable. It’s an age-old tale of infidelity and its consequences. We’ve seen it a thousand times before.

My girlfriend and I wondered after the movie if we would have liked it more if we had approached it from the outset as a film noir.

After reading a few other reviews about this movie, I found that people either loved it or just thought it was so so. This by today’s standards says it’s a great movie. With the lack of good movies coming out, even Woody Allen can do something right.

It seems that Hollywood keeps pumping out the crap and when something comes out that’s not; people seem to pick it apart. I guess it’s because they can’t fathom Hollywood doing something somewhat decent.

To set the record straight I was one of the people that thought this movies was awesome. I didn’t care that the plot was from another story (Crime and Punishment), or how at times it was predictable; I still thought it was a good movie. It would be hard for a director to find an original story anyways. If you wan’t to get critical, every modern fictional story writen is a rip off of something that has been told before.

Not every movie needs to be an epic like, “Lord of the Rings.” Sometimes it’s just nice to watch a good drama that doesn’t have a story book ending. I would recommend this movie to anyone that is not overly critical.

Hmn, I couldn’t help but think of “The Talented Mr. Ripley” throughout the film. Things I like about this film: tennis, luck and opera.

Why I recommend this — 8 years ago

Intense movie, tight, efficient editing. Surprised that Woody Allen has this dark side in him. Excellent soundtrack.

I don’t get all the hubub about this movie. I am grateful that it’s not yet another example of Woody some how seducing a 24 year old, but I don’t get his fascination with Russian Literature…as this plot was a clear nod to Crime and Punishment. I feel like Rhys-Meyer’s character didn’t really have a character, but that woody was trying to hint at something struggle going on within him that just wasn’t there. In fact…this movie was totally predictable, nothing that hadn’t been done before. Just refurbished in gorgeous scenery and gorgeous leads.
