Light, entertaining, enjoyable. Rather like pizza.  — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

It’s the 1980s, and Jojo (Lili Taylor) has cold feet during her wedding, calling it off. She and her two friends Daisy (Julia Roberts) and Kat (Annabeth Gish) – sisters, but very different – work at the pizza parlour in a small town called Mystic in the USA. Daisy is wild and sexy, Kat is sensible and sweet… and during the course of the film, all three girls find themselves wondering about the future of relationships they’re in.

There’s not really a whole lot of plot, and its’ all rather predictable, but nicely done, with some amusing moments, and great rapport between the three friends. Not too deep, but enjoyable while it lasts; good for a Saturday evening in. Just like pizza, really.

Upon going to Mystic I discovered that in the 24 years since this movie came out:

1) The area where the movie was filmed is still exactly the same. The storefronts look the same and you can still walk right up to and over the swing bring that is outside the pizza place.

2) Mystic Pizza, the restaurant, REALLY embraced its movie fame. The whole place is plastered with movie photos (now badly faded by the sun) and all the flat screen tvs play the movie on an endless loop. They opened 3 more locations afterward because they became so popular. (On their menu they say they had to open more locations for peoples’ safety.) The interior does not resemble the movie in any way. Maybe it did at one time. And the pizza tasted like Pizza Hut to me. Definitely nothing special. Again, maybe it was great at one time.

Well worth the experience of seeing a movie and then immediately going to that location. It gave a kind of surreal quality to a commonplace experience. I’d recommend it on that level if you ever visit Mystic, CT.

Watched this because I’m going to Mystic for the first time tomorrow. Maybe we’ll even stop at Mystic Pizza for one of our stops…

Cute, bland — 4 years ago

Well acted and photographed, but very predictable. Sort of like having three separate Harlequin romances intertwined into one movie.

My wife has been bugging me to see this movie for the last couple of years (she’s a child of the 80s), and I have cleverly avoided it all this time. Based on the plot and the pictures shown on the box, and the fact I’ve never cared for Julia Roberts, I had really low expectations for this movie. I was surprised.

I mainly gave in because I was curious about Annabeth Gish’s (The X-Files) performance. Gish was great; and I found an adorableness in her I hadn’t expected. Lili Taylor gave a good performance as well. Julia Roberts was okay, but probably the best I’d ever seen her. The story wasn’t cheesy at all, and, while I expected an 80’s sex romp comedy, the movie was quite modest and dramatic.

Unfortunately, the story just isn’t there. It’s a slice of life (no pizza pun intended) of three girls working at a pizza parlor. Sure interesting things happen in their love lives, but nothing really memorable. Still, I’d call it an above average movie for the time.

WORTH CONSUMING!

This movie was not nearly as obnoxious as I expected it to be. I think Lili Taylor is great. The best scene in the movie is when she carries on a single-handed, freaking out debate with herself over her relationship with her boyfriend (Vincent D’Onofrio!!!!!) while her co-workers stare at her, dumbfounded. Annabeth Gish is good too. And Matt Damon is in it, and he is about 14 years old!

WORTH CONSUMING!

This is the least annoying I’ve ever seen the otherwise-atrocious Lili Taylor and the ubiquitous Julia Roberts. But maybe I’m just biased because of their Perfect Eighties Hair.
