This is a beautifully written book on stylesheets.
It is specifically concerned with CSS stylesheets for HTML web pages. It was written back in 1997 so it is written in the CSS 1 standard, not the newer CSS 2 standard.
This is very much a book about style and how to create a style’s look with the use of CSS.
A number of exemplars of common styles – home page, chapter page, etc., are presented – along with the CSS needed to effect that look.
Some of the pages look really cool. Others are like: well, yeah. They would be okay in 1997 but nearly a decade later their look would not cut the mustard. However, even the ones that are like that are still good examples of doing simple things with simple CSS.
So the thing about this book is that rather than trying to tell you what each piece of CSS does from the bottom up, it shows you certain kinds of pages that might match the goals you have for the look of some of your pages. Then, it teaches you how to achieve that particular book with CSS. It’s a very practical book from that standpoint.
