Fantastic acting and realization. My only problem was that it could have easily been 30 minutes longer to build more on the Pfeiffer/Malkovich romance (soulmate status didn’t seem to be reached in any of the scenes), the secondary characters, and to not wrap up so quickly. It’s not usual that you want a movie to be longer, but this is definitely one of those cases.
Glenn Close is magnificent – easily her best work ever. Unfortunately 1989 featured a ridiculous number of fantastic performances (including Meryl Streep in “A Cry in the Dark” and Sigourney Weaver in “Gorillas in the Mist”) and she lost the Best Actress award to Jodie Foster in “The Accused.” Definitely one of the strongest years ever for meaty female roles.
