WORTH CONSUMING!

This is not a bad movie, but the numerous interactions with a severed finger have made me physically ill.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang was directed by Shane Black, who wrote one of my favorite movies “Long Kiss Goodnight,” and stars Robert Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer. It is based on a New York petty thief who ends up in Hollywood due to a mistake identity. He is then placed in a crazy situation with different storylines that seem to not be connected, but at the end we find out they really are. It kinds of reminds me of a Tom Robbins book.

I thought the movie was great. It kept me laughing, and I even cried a little. Robert Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer were great, and they really made their characters come to life. It showed how crazy Hollywood is, and the underlying secrets that everyone knows but no one talks about. I consider it a great, dark comedy that is definitely better than what you will think it will be.

WORTH CONSUMING!

I liked it, but there was a big feeling of urgency in the film, like they couldn’t speak fast enough – was there a time limit on the film or something? It made it rather hard to follow at times, but oh well.

I like this movie! Tongue planted firmly in cheek, it has some great lines – mostly for Val Kilmer, who does deadpan humour so well – and Robert Downey Jr makes a perfect, droll narrator.

Just a fun flick :)

WORTH CONSUMING!

On paper, Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang doesn’t sound like a great movie. Directed by Shane Black, the guy who wrote the Lethal Weapon movies (1 and 2 were good, but that’s about it) and The Last Boy Scout (ack). Starring Robert Downey, Jr. and Val Kilmer, two guys you just LOVED in the 80s and early 90s. But somehow, it all comes together. Black’s script is slick and flashy, but it’s also got substance and a good mystery. He takes metatextual potshots at the action film genre (a little less subtly than he did in The Long Kiss Goodnight, a film I really liked), and then combines them with action movie clichés. It shouldn’t work, but it does.

Part of the reason it does is because Kilmer and Downey are magic. Kilmer gives Gay Perry style and humour, while Downey instills his character with just the right amount of charm, haplesness, and self-deprecating humour. Michelle Monaghan more than holds her own in the presence of these talented actors, and gives her character – who I had initially dismissed as one-dimensional – actual depth.

Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang is funny, smart, and full of action. Definitely recommended.

I love it. A screwball murder mystery made modern—very clever, very well-acted, only a tiny bit too ironic. The dialogue is great, and the movie even manages to be a little moving, somehow. Now I need to track down the book it’s based on.

Excellent Dark Comedy — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I normally don’t care for dark comedies. For some reason, a high body count in a movie isn’t terribly funny to me. This film was so unique, original and completely outlandish that I could overlook the fact that someone died every third minute.

Ever since I saw Real Genius, I’ve been convinced that Val Kilmer should do comedies. He is nothing short of hilarious. I was so disappointed when all he was doing was action movies and then completely disappeared. I can only hope this movie will be the avenue that puts him back into comedies, where he belongs.

I loved this movie. I hadn’t heard much about it, or any great reviews and so I didn’t go into it with any expectations but right from the first moments of the film it is compelling. I just began listing the people I should recommend this to.
The dialogue is amazing and delivered so well. I just haven’t seen anything like this a for a while.

WORTH CONSUMING!

This is a great American film. In fact, when we talk American films, this might be the best of 2005. I don’t mean movies made in the United States, I mean American films. You know, genres that the US completely owns. This is such a film.

Can you believe that Robert Downey Jr and Val Kilmer are starring in a great movie!? I still can’t believe it. Here’s 2 actors that seem to have been thrown out for the new generation. They play roles that these younger actors could have played, but they do it with a style and class that no one else could have. And trust me, this movie is all about style. There’s even a tongue-in-cheek reference in the movie about Collin Farell being the real actor they wanted but Downey came cheaper. Don’t overlook it. This movie is loaded with jabs at Hollywood.

This is a mystery flick. I was too busy enjoying the scenery, though, so the plot became a little tough for me to follow. I had no idea it was going to be a complex story, so I didn’t pay close enough attention. Fortunately, they do remind you from time to time if you missed anything, so by the end you’ll felt caught up. That’s one of the strengths of this film. It knows how fast it’s going and it knows it can remind you from time to time without making you feel stupid.

Some people have compared this to The Big Lebowski. I have no idea why, but they do. This movie is better. A lot better. The end. TBL was just a quote machine.

Speaking of quote machines, I’d like to close by saying: captain f*ing magic (And no, that won’t be funny unless you watch this movie)
