I was really looking forward to seeing this, and I was not disappointed. It incorporates so many things I love… food, travel, meditation, and Julie Roberts. It is a long movie, and I watched the Director’s Cut, which is 146 minutes, but to cram an entire year of living into less than two hours would have been impossible, and it seemed shorter, which is a reflection of good editing.
The Liz Gilbert character is difficult to get into at first. She’s got it all, but doesn’t own her life. The journey she takes to regain her passion for living is fascinating, not without unexpected twists and turns, and the inclusion of such beautiful locations as Italy, India, and Indonesia (I, I, I… the pun was not lost on me) just made it more fun to watch, as did Javier Bardem as Felipe, one of the men in Liz’s life. He’s such a good actor.
Food, family, love, spirituality, self discovery.. it’s all here. A journey well worth taking.
