This is a movie about family. The fact that it is about a lesbian couple who give birth to a son and a daughter sired by the same sperm donor makes it unique, but that’s about as far as the differences go. All of the problems they face as a family are familiar to heterosexual parents, from the challenges of raising teens, to job and money issues and sexual relations, growing old, seeking identity within a relationship, and seeing a child off to college. Excellent performances by Benning and Moore, and Ruffalo is surprisingly fresh in his portrayal of the biological father. Nature or nurture, it’s all in play here. Well worth the accolades and Oscar nominations it received.
