WORTH CONSUMING!

I hated Alice in Wonderland as a child. I couldn’t handle the complete chaos, it left me confused and wanting to cry.

I liked this though, maybe because I’ve grown up and chaos doesn’t confuse me as much, or maybe because it’s not quite the same story.

I’ll probably read the original book some time soon, to compare storylines from this film and from what I can remember hearing/reading as a child.

I think there’s a lot of symbolism in the (original) story, and feel like it might actually help me grow up when I get the deeper meaning of it all.

WORTH CONSUMING!

I loved it. After I read all the reviews, I went into this with low expectations seriously hoping it wouldn’t disappoint me and that Mr Burton wouldn’t have turned it into a macabre-fest as so many of his films have been. I actually felt that Mr Burton showed quite a bit of self restraint in that area and perhaps in a few others that he shouldn’t have.

Personally I loved that it wasn’t the same weary telling of the same old tale of Alice in Wonderland. I loved that it was a continuing of the tale with a more in depth look at the characters and their silly quirks. Though this is one of the areas that I think Mr Burton shouldn’t have held back as much as he did.

I loved that it incorporated the Jabberwocky. I thought it would have been great if Burton had the Red Queen chanting the poem during the fight scene in order to give the beast more strength and endurance. I mean really, if you think about it, Alice did kill it awfully quick and with minimal damage to herself. Even that white black spotted dog-bear creature got in a good festering scratch during their tussle.

Oh well, I still loved it, even the silly dance towards the end that so many people seemed to hate. I think the nay-sayers have forgotten that it is a nonsense dance from a nonsense place, I only wish they would have shown more of it.

Mia Wasikowska was a wonderful Alice! The rest of the cast were perfectly chosen. Very entertaining!

WORTH CONSUMING!

I saw this twice at the cinema and to be honest i don’t know why, it was just meh.

I think my expectations were too high. Alice in Wonderland is my favourite disney cartoon , so i was hoping it would be more like that then Johnny Depp just being a prat in a costume and tim burton? you’ve gone a bit shit havent you? Why you thought it would be a good idea for that god awful dance at the end was beyond me so lets just forget it exists and go back to watching Edward Scissorhands ok?

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

I would rather have my face attacked by a badger than allow my childhood crush on Johnny Depp to be further defiled by the viewing of another Burton craptacular.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Managed to watch it on 3rd attempt… The first two times I fell asleep. It took a while to get into and I know that it was a very simplistic storyline; but I didn’t mind that, so I did enjoy it. Johnny Depp played the Mad Hatter as a dark and disturbed character… Wouldn’t expect anything less of him… ;) (Although the dance at the end was pretty dire and embarrassing and was not needed at all) :)

WORTH CONSUMING!

The beginning is strikingly similar to the “Wizard of Oz” with its character set ups (including the caterpillar and the twins) and the swirling descent to Wonderland followed by emergence from a drab setting into a colorful one. The red queen and white queen parallel the good and bad witches, too. There’s even a journey down a road with several companions. I guess Tim Burton didn’t feel that borrowing from the Lewis Carroll classics was sufficient. But it is all in good fun, with Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter superb in their roles. Alice grows up plenty and the whole film worked for me. Worth a watch, for sure.

Smoke b4 u go c it for sure — 3 years ago

Rather overrated prior to release. Yes it is in 3D and the cinematography is excellent. I just wished I’d smoked a doobie before going – it could have been so much more enjoyable.

WORTH CONSUMING!

I was really really looking forward to seeing this, and very very high expectations were set. The movie didn’t really meet them though. I saw the 3D version on my birthday and it sure looked gorgeous. The scenery, the costumes, the makeup were all wonderful. And Helena Bonham Carter stood out for me. But Alice… came across as pretty lifeless. Johnny is always good, minus the awful dancing bit near the end. Nothing in the movie grabbed me, swept me away or got me excited as I hoped it would. It was still worth watching for the visuals. But the story part felt a bit like wasted potential.

Not as Original as it Could Have Been — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

A fun new take on the classic characters, but the “new” plot is actually pretty predictable.

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

This movie goes to show that it doesn’t matter the level of brilliancy of those involved, if the movie only exists as a format to show off special effects, it is going to suck. Much more attention was given to setting up Alice’s wardrobe changes than to creating a good story. Burton never settles on whether the film is a remake of the original story or a sequel, and therefore ends up with a messy muddle. Alice has been to Wonderland before as a girl, but spends most of the movie simply repeating her girlhood adventures since she doesn’t remember it.

Obviously the appeal of the movie is to see how Burton envisions Wonderland and its many iconic characters, but that seems to be as far as Burton is willing to go. There was so much reliance on people already knowing the characters and their situations, and not on a being able to enjoy this film as a stand-alone piece. And when you constantly are comparing the film to its sources (both the books and the original Disney animated cartoon), this film can only disappoint – mostly because of the way this one is stripped of any and all wit and charm.

What Burton does differently is his gravitation towards the Jabberwocky. Carroll’s poem is heralded as being the best nonsense poem of all time, but for someone who has previously shown such prowess in achieving cinematic whimsy, Alice in Wonderland comes off as very dull and over-worked.
