A shadow of his former self. — 2 years ago
Disgrace was almost too painful to watch. Rape and race issues make for a powerful statement, and even more powerful if the story’s set in South Africa. In this movie, women are either tools or trading pieces for advancement. Men can do what they want with them, when they want and however often. A white man is powerless when confronted by a younger black. A white man is powerless when overpowered by three black men. A white man is ineffective against a black man’s ploy to steal his daughter and her possessions. Disgrace is a film about hate, ugliness, and hopelessness. Slightly tarnished acting by the once great Malkovich, who in his latter years seems to delight in portraying lack-grace villains with a prominent flabby gut.
For shame.
