I’m enjoying this book, but I don’t like the author very much. Sure, he’s done plenty of excellent reporting, and covered many major world events, and his tales both fascinating and entertaining. The problem is, he’s a smug bastard, and his condescending tone is grating. But then perhaps if I’d seen the collapse of the Berlin Wall, the release of Nelson Mandela, the fall of Ceaucescu, Tiannamen Square and the Gulf War from inside Bahgdad, I’d be a smug bastard too.
