It is so subtly funny, while at the same time capturing the spirit of the times with lovely descriptive language. I found myself enjoying this more and more as it went on. The characters are endearing and wonderfully unique. (Sebastian! <3)

I am reading this for one of my on-line groups. Not a bad book. I’m glad I read it but I don’t think I’d recommend it to others.

A portrait of a lost era, vividly rendered, The satirical bent remains but is tempered by wider focus of a mature stylist concerned about friendship, religion, love and convenience. By all accounts this is his masterpiece.

This should appeal to anyone who has had a friendship so intense they thought it would never end. But it did.
