WORTH CONSUMING!

Well I thought it was worth consuming, but the fact that I had the DVD out on hire for near 4 1/2 weeks and took 3 sessions to finally get through it tells you something. The style, scenery, cinematography were all excellent, the pace a bit slow, the story interesting in parts, boring in others, ultmately could have had 30 mins trimmed off easily. 3.5/5

WORTH CONSUMING!

It’s good, but it’s also painfully overrated. If this story were told with a man and a woman no one would have paid attention. It’s interesting early on, but turns into a gigantic bore in the second act before it improves at the end. It’s pretty ironic what makes this movie different and interesting in the first place, being a gay cowboy movie, is the one thing people in the gay community claim to not want the film to be judged on.

The best movie of 2005 — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

It’s the biggest “joke” of 2005, but also the best movie of 2005. Yet another reason why Crash winning the Oscar for best picture is an absolute joke.

This, more than anything else, is a movie about confusion, and trying to hide what you do not understand about yourself. It’s a story about 2 men that that consider themselves straight, but are drawn to homosexuality. One hates himself for it, and it destroys his home life. The other finds himself addicted to the secret, and terrified of the outside world. What he has on brokeback mountain is all he wants, and he hates the reality that life must go on.

Everything about this movie is excellent. There are no forced emotions or cliched Oscar-bait tactics. It’s just a good story that is well acted and directed. This is the best movie of 2005.

WORTH CONSUMING!

This film commanded my attention and stayed with me long after I left the theatre. It has inspired passionate conversations with my friends and long, interesting trains of thought. It wasn’t perfect, to be sure, but it was compelling and intense and definitely worth seeing.

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

I was going to go Wishy Washy on this, but decided instead just to bite the bullet and say it’s not worth it. In general, its not worth the hype. Sure I buy the love story, sure the cowboys are hot, but come on. It was way too long and way too drawn out. I watched this with a good friend of mine and we both dubbed it according to the title above. There were a few good moments, and our own running commentary kept us from falling asleep, but this movie was way too hyped to be called a winner.

Good moral to the story though: If you’re husband is constantly going fishing, you might wanna do some research into what he’s REALLY doing.

I enjoyed it because I love Jake and Heath but I think for all the hype that it got it could have been so much more. It was a bit drawn out. I liked the idea of the movie and I am glad I saw it, dont think I could sit through it again. Also happy that it didnt take the whole cake at the oscars, there were some great films this year that truly deserved recognition.

I wish there were an in between rating—worth seeing so that I know what all the fuss is about. I didn’t really see the chemistry between them. Very beautiful visually.

I still wish it was a bit shorter. There were a bunch of scenes that seemed more elongated than they should be, but that’s just me.

On a positive note, I love how they treated the gay parts of the movie so it’s much more…approachable to the “normal” person.

WORTH CONSUMING!

I say “worth consuming” because it was a decent movie, well made and well acted, but “just okay”. I’m not mad that I saw it and I know why it is getting all the buzz, but it’s not the best picture of 2005 by any means (and I’ve only seen 20 some movies from 05)

this movie makes u think.
it treats the topic in a very sensitive, not segregating and not judging anybody way.
i like the way it shows traditional marriage-based relationships in comparison to the ‘new’ ones and the way movie makes u think what love in this context really is…
And the sheep – look at the pictures to the poems of William Blake :

How is this film like and unlike Treasure of the Sierra Madre? Against some popular opinion, I think it IS a western.

WORTH CONSUMING!

I’ve done it. I watched Brokeback Mountain. After all that I’ve read about it online until its release in Australia, it seemed fitting I watched it as part of a fundraiser for Perth’s Gay & Lesbian Community Services. I’m surprised I never made a mention of it in my blog all this time, although I was very excited about watching it.

I wasn’t sure what to make of it as we were leaving the cinema. I loved it, but it was hard to put into words why I felt that way… and what was I feeling anyway? We brought up many points about the movie over dinner, and yet, we wondered at times if it was overhyped cinema. After all, there have been mainstream queer films such as Boys Don’t Cry and Far From Heaven.

It was when I was left to my own thoughts when I turned in for the night that I realised what a powerful movie it was. This is a movie that stays with you, and not just in one way, but even with issues that you refuse to deal with, whatever they may be. Apart from the obvious love story, there is the hurt that is caused to other people who want to love you. I felt most for Ennis’ wife Alma, who never spoke a word about it until long after their divorce.

I’m not familiar with Ang Lee’s work, but I must say the breathtaking scenery is one to be applauded, and his execution of the tenderness between Jack and Ennis was handled very well. In fact, every character felt real, and it was almost as if you knew each of their stories by their faces.

The movie bears repeated watching for the many facets to its story, but to go through the heartache over again makes me hesitant. Shame on society that such issues still occur in our time. You might say that we live in relatively liberal times now, but what of those who still go through the same heartache that Jack and Ennis went through? They’re just as important as our relationships, and there should be no reason why they have to go through anything like this.

It’s difficult to articulate why this is a movie you have to watch, if this is the only movie you visit the cinema for (I know I did it). I’ll say again misty-eyed that it was a wonderful movie.

This was definitely one of the best movies of 2006. The acting is great, both by Jake Gylenhaal and Heath Ledger. Ledger did get more of the critical acclaim, but don’t overlook Gylenhaal’s ease with his character just because his is a more jokey role. The cinematography was great, as was Ang Lee’s directing.

The story itself is simple, sweet, and sad. There’s a message, but I’d rather not delve into it. Watch it and see. It is not just the “gay cowboy movie.”

what this isn't is a story about two gay men — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

What it is is a love story. A deeply sad love story about two people who should be together, but due to the small mindedness of others, cannot be.

It could be anyone’s story, really. Could be you, could be me. That what makes it hurt. That’s why it hits you like a punch to the gut. Because it’s a sad fact that all too often people who love each other deeply - who want nothing more from this world than each other - are denied that opportunity because other people have a problem with it.

I don’t really understand the Oscar buzz regarding Michelle Williams. She did a good job, yes, but I didn’t feel it was stellar and she was such a nominal character in the movie anyway.

However, both Heath Ledger and (my personal favorite) Jake Gyllenhaal put forth phenomenal performances. No surprise there, since they’re both amazingly talented actors. Jake’s done a lot of darker, indier movies by now, and I love him like that. So it was good to see Heath Ledger break out of his so-so movie slump finally and really get to show off his acting chops.

Epic saga, sweeping drama, whatever you want to call it. The point is that love is love is love is love. And nothing should tand in the way of that.

Hard Love — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This movie was not what I was expecting. We do not have TV and work has been so busy that I have not had much of a chance to listen to the radio or read the papers. I thought it was going to be about handsome cowboys, the hard life they live and the love that keeps them going. I am in to light stuff these days.

Well, in reality it was about the love that sustained them but also about the denial of that love in a society that did not permit their relationship together. If they had awknowledged and acted on their need to permanently be with each other then they could have moved away and it may have had a happier ending. Although there was a theme of gut wrenching sadness and lonliness, the wilderness back drop was perfect because it mirrored their harsh lives and provided a non judgmental stage for them to explore and express themselves. I loved this movie on many levels. It is haunting and I keep coming back to certain scenes. Their happiness by the river, the cruel demonstration to the young boys of what happens if you get involved with a man, the perfect lying by Anne Hathaway when she describes how her husband died, the love in the eyes of Jake G.’s movie mom when she lets Heath’s character upstairs…and many more. When I looked around the theater, almost all of us had tears in our eyes and when Willie Nelson comes on at the end and sings “He was a friend of mine” it was game over.

Simply Amazing…words can’t describe it…after the two hours I could have easily watched it for another five…an instant classic. Amazing performances from everybody…Heather Ledger stands out…and I was almost moved to tears during the phone call at the end (amazing acting from Anne Hathaway)...this movie is astounding.
