Too much "edgy", too little satire — 2 years ago
I did occasionally laugh at this slightly fictionalized account of Charles Manson and the Tate-LaBianca murders but not often enough. The movie seemed like it wanted to be smart satire that exploded taboos but too often it seemed deliberately calculated to shock without making you think. Long loving shots (in pornographic closeup) of Claymation sex, “jokes” about abortion and the superficiality of gay men, and putting the POV into the eyes of one of the “Family” didn’t really provoke thought but they did come close to provoking vomit and disgust.
The musical numbers were funny and redeemed it a bit but overall we wish we had Netflix-ed something else…
