NOT WORTH CONSUMING

The reason I hate this movie with a slight passion is not because of the “gay cowboy” thing. That didn’t bother me at all. I am no homophobe.

What bothered me was the pace. It was one of the slowest movies I have ever seen, and I don’t get easily bored by movies. I do have to say I got pretty damn upset at the end.

I’m nowhere near an actual movie critic, so watch it if you want. Just wanted to put in my two cents.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Great movie. Sure, it’s not a bullets and banditos Western, but I’d argue it’s a Western nonetheless, even if that has to be a modern or post-modern Western. Laconic, emotionally unavailable men, the camera’s love of the gorgeous scenery…

Fantastic acting, and I get this coincidental mote in my eye every time the climax comes on the TV. Goddamned air conditioning.

WORTH CONSUMING!

It was a slow movie but I thought that it was still really good. And just one day after I finished it came the news that Heather Ledger died! How sad! I thought he was quite good in this film.

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

It was far too slow. I don’t mind a slow-paced movie but this was unbearable. Even my husband who usually enjoys a slow paced movie more than I do thought it was gruelingly slow. And (warning, here comes the controversial part) I feel like it was only so popular because it’s breaking barriers when it comes to homosexuality. I applaud that part of it but I wish they could have done so with a decent movie.

And please would someone tell me why Heath Ledger was incapable of moving his lips? I understand character development and all but that was just silly.

WORTH CONSUMING!

I thought that this was a very good film, obviously not an upbeat one though, so I wouldn’t watch it on an off day. I would say the theme in this film is universal for both men and women. It is about feeling trapped by love and feeling trapped by the institutional relationships.

I wish this had been a happier film, but at least the stereotype of the gay cowboy film is soon seen to be mistaken.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Excellent, excellent movie. The scenery/cinematography alone is worth the cost of viewing, but the story is powerful… heart-wrenching. The initial sexual encounter may be a bit considered by many to be shocking … very out of the box for mainstream films. In future, every film with a homosexual theme will be compared to this, but it’s as much a Casablanca-style love story as anything else. I cried twice, so bring at least one and maybe two hankies.

And now that I’ve seen this, I can say with confidence that it is a BETTER movie than Crash, which beat it out for the Best Picture Oscar.

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

Really, I feel that I have been lied-to by The Hype. I was told that this was going to be a Gay Cowboy movie. As the movie began, were they driving cattle? No, they were herding sheep. It was a Gay Shepherd movie, and who in their right mind would want to watch that?

In all seriousness, I assumed it would at least be a good drama. But it was very boring and slow, and quickly lost my interest. I left the room to work on my computer after about half an hour and left Missy alone to sit through the all the 45 second dramatic pauses.

A pretty good movie, I suppose. It won a couple academy awards but it still strikes me as a movie people will say they liked so no one calls them a homophobe. What started out as an independant film that exploded all over the mainstream, I don’t think it lived up to the hype most people say, that it was life changing, that it brought people to the light.

There are hundreds of other films that have gone into characters exploring their sexuality or discovering it. Brokeback is just the one that happened to get alot of coverage. The movie was okay though..I guess.
