It’s candy you can rationalize: there’s a ton of it in a 1.5 ounce bag, so it takes a while to eat, but it’s mostly air so it won’t kill your diet. I love the way a wispy pinch of it melts on my tongue.

What is the story about cotton candy being sold ready bagged at fairs in Britain, this must be sacrilegious. How are you supposed to smell it through the plastic?

I went to the zoo when I was 3 and my parents told me all the animals would be in cages. But I knew they had lied when a pompous goose (who was taller than me) bit my finger. To pacify me, they bought me cotton candy. I didn’t like it, it was too sweet and sticky, so my dad disolved it in a fountain. The pink just melted into the water, it was pretty. The moral of the story is, never confront ill-tempered waterfowl.
