Watchmen: Who Reads The Absolute? — 2 years ago
It took me a long, long time to read Absolute Watchmen. Sure, I’ve read Watchmen before, about a dozen times. But with the art blown up so much, it was a little daunting. I love comics, but I’ve always had a hard time amlgamating the art and the words. (I used to read every comic twice; once to focus on the words and once to focus on the art.) So I spent a LOT of time on each issue of Absolute Watchmen, really trying to absorb the words and art together. And it took a REALLY long time: the first issue took me over twenty-five minutes to read. Not exactly what I’m used to. But it was so worth it to spend the extra time. LIke I said, I’ve read this a lot of times before, but this time through, I noticed a lot of new stuff. The symbolism and symmetry in the words and images are profound, and I don’t care what people say: I love the ending. Some might balk at the extra cost – I got it for half-price – but I really believe that the Absolute format is a great way to read Watchmen. Not just because the pages are so much bigger, but for the extra goodies: story proposals, script excepts, and layout drawings. It makes me want to read it all over again—in a few months, anyhow.

It didn’t end at all like I had expected, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
There are a lot of great lines in the book, but one that really stuck with me was one of the quotations at the end of a chapter:
“Battle not with monsters lest ye become a monster, and if you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes also into you.” – Nietzsche

I’m re-reading Watchmen, so I decided to make an icon.
