A story about this — 2 years ago
If you’re one of those people who doesn’t really like the taste of alcohol, give this a try.
It’s made by soaking unripe ume plums in shochu, which, like vodka, can be distilled from any number of ingredients with natural sugar – potatoes, rice, wheat, etc.
Then sugar is added, giving it a fruity, sweet taste.
From what I understand, “plum wine” is a bit of a mistranslation. It’s really more of a liqueur. (The Japanese word, umeshu, looks like a combination of ume and shochu, but I’m no language scholar.)
I had it on the rocks and found it a little overpowering, but I wouldn’t mind trying it in a cocktail.
