As I was reading this I realized that I did not, in fact, really know anything about the Scopes trial. I had no idea it was a ruse conconcted by the town itself to gather publicity, because the ACLU was looking for a test case. Good lord.

Anyway, the book is quite good—nuanced, descriptive, not too preachy. I wasn’t a huge fan of the idea of making Francie “in love” with John Scopes, but whatever.
