There is an exuberance to this film that is hard not to enjoy, even if it has been years since you were a 14 year old girl. However, I had really high expectations based on my love of Bend It Like Beckham, and this movie never fulfilled those expectations. Mostly, I think, because it’s just a movie about girls trying to get a boyfriend. Comparing the two, this film did little to explore the family dynamic present in Bend it Like Beckham. The parents were much more pawns of the plot to move around rather than actual characters (I mean, how realistic is it for a teenager to snap her fingers and decide whether the family is moving to New Zealand or not?). I enjoyed the casting – the teenagers looked like teenagers, not 20-year-olds who “pass” for 15, and I felt they acted a like teenagers do. For a while I thought that they were yelling most of their lines, but then I remembered how my friends and I sounded when we got together – LOUD! I found a lot of similarities between this and Bridget Jones (even down to the big knickers), but it was still very fresh and quite funny.
