One of the epochal kitchen-sink films from the 60’s, written by Shelagh Delaney and revered by fans of Morrissey everywhere, this is a film to be enjoyed by all. Its main character is a girl who is living her life to the full; I cannot write more of it, without giving stuff away, but if this film were a person, it’d be a libertine, a rose grown through concrete much in the same sense as Antonioni’s “L’Avventura”. There are several grand pieces here: a wonderful, razor-sharp script (converted to the silver screen through assistance of Delaney herself), wonderful cinematography, immediate and technically radiant, acting that says everything to my life, a funny and touching soundtrack, wound together by tight direction. Some scenes has the feel of the theatre stage, while others can only be achieved through the camera lens, e.g. when Helen watches Jimmy fare off to sea. This film really portrays the urgency of life. See it.
